Via di Monserrato, one of the most elegant and interesting streets in Rome, connects Piazza Farnese to Piazza della Moretta and owes its name to the church of S. Maria in Monserrato that stands here. The street has something austere; in fact it was known in the past as “Corte Savella”, the prison guarded by the family of Savelli; to maintain it, they could count on rich income: Court fees, sums paid by solvent prisoners and other arbitrary fees such as those on milfs. The most famous prisoner was undoubtedly Beatrice Cenci and her stepmother Lucrezia, who were brought to the gallows on 11.09.1599. Move the Prisons, the building was purchased by the English College, where it still has its headquarters. From the 16th century the street was transformed into an elegant and quiet street; houses were built for cardinals, noble families and beautiful courtiers. The stately appearance kept it even in the following centuries, so much to be chosen as the place of residence of the family of Cardinal Antonelli, secretary of state of Pius IX. Another pearl of the road is the church of San Girolamo della Carità, linked to the memory of San Filippo Neri, who lived there for many years.
