The Balduina district is part of the XIV Municipio and is located on the southern slope of Monte Mario; it has 139 meters high and this makes it the highest point in the city. Very often the area has been the backdrop for film and literary works. The name of the area originates from the name of the brother of Pope Julius III del Monte, Baldovino, owner of many lands placed on the slopes of Monte Mario. The oldest street is Via San Tommaso d’Aquino which connects with the most important street of the district “Via Trionfale” that led pilgrims to the basilica of Saint Peter. In the 1950s, buildings were built for and by professional cooperatives of journalists, magistrates, officials and ministers. In the 1960s, the area reached its peak of development: the buildings spread over the whole slope of the hill, standing on one side along the Rome-Viterbo railway and on the other side to the ridge marked by the Via Trionfale. The district retains traces of ancient past and is characterized by numerous shops able to meet the needs of the population; many of the shops are family-run and there are numerous markets. There are spacious green areas such as the nature reserve of Monte Mario, the famous “Zodiac”, where you can admire a picturesque view over the city and the astronomical observatory with the Copernican Museum. The central streets and the attractions of the capital are easily reached in a very short time thanks to the good transport network.
