Rione Monti is the first of twenty-two Rioni in Rome. The old name of the Rione was Montium er Biberatrice, from the name of an ancient street that ran inside the remains of the Markets of Trajan. Monti is an eclectic neighborhood in the city center, with bohemian and classic elements. In the south-west there are archaeological sites such as the Markets of Trajan and the palace of the Domus Aurea of Nero. A few steps from the district there are the magnificent basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli that houses the famous Moses by Michelangelo. Between two major thoroughfares, Via Cavour and Via Nazionale, it contains the Suburra, the old “Sub Urbe” district (below the city), whose basements come out of the Colosseo. Its streets are made of cobblestones and its night alleys are breathtaking beauty. The district revolves around the Piazzetta of Madonna dei Monti, with the characteristic Fountain of the Catechumens designed by the architect Giacomo della Porta which is the main meeting place for both residents and tourists. Gourmet shops and slow food restaurants dot the streets. Monti still has a network of small traders and craftsmen who give the impression that time has stood still: they are gilders, carpenters, blacksmiths, antique dealers; and then there are them: painters and art galleries; small but precious. There is also one of the most famous vintage markets in Rome.
