Campo de’ Fiori is one of the most famous squares in Rome, between Via dei Giubbonari and Piazza della Cancelleria, on the borders of Rioni Parione and Regola. Its name comes from the presence of a vast flowery meadow, as well as vegetable gardens, which in 1400 adorned the square. The first works of urbanization took place in 1456. Many palaces were built and the square became a place of passage for prominent personalities such as ambassadors and cardinals who from Trastevere, passing through Ponte Sisto went to San Pietro. Campo de Fiori became the home of cultural and commercial activities, shops and craftsmen and a thriving and picturesque market, whose atmosphere is well represented by the famous film Campo de’ Fiori of 1943, with Anna Magnani and Aldo Fabrizi. In the center of the square stands the statue of the philosopher Giordano Bruno burned for heresy in 1600 right at this point. Nowadays Campo de’ Fiori has become one of the favorite night spots for young people, both Italian and foreign, thanks to the presence of many inns, pubs, restaurants and hotels.
