Piazza dei Quiriti is immersed in the middle of the Rione Prati and takes its name from the inhabitants of the city of “Cures” or “Quirites”, that is the Sabines, inhabitants and co-founders of Rome. Another theory sees in the Quirites the same inhabitants of Rome, so called because they are citizens but also and above all worshipers of the god Quirino, that is Romolo ascended to the status of divinity. At the centre of the square there is a fountain, built in 1928 by the sculptor Attilio Selva (Trieste 1888 1970). on commission from the governor of Rome, the Reatino Ludovico Spada Veralli Potenziani, who had received the assignment from Mussolini for the urban management of the capital. The fountain is called the Caryatid fountain. The creation of the Fountain, considered “scandalous” for the presence of four female nude statues, is counted among the causes that led Mussolini to “resign” the governor in 1928. The structure of the fountain is presented with a large circular lower basin that holds an architectural base which in turn supports the main tank surmounted by a basin, supported by four naked caryatids. In the centre, a pin-shaped terminal. In the vicinity of the square stands the Church of San Gioacchino, completed in 1898 on a project by the architect Raffaele Ingami, who was to celebrate the priestly and episcopal jubilee of Leo XIII.
