Aurelio is the thirteenth district of Rome, located in the west of the city, close to the Leonine Walls and the Aurelian Walls, and rises along the initial stretch of the Via Aurelia, from which it takes its name. In the Imperial period, the first stretch of the Aurelia was characterized by the presence of numerous Horti: those of Vipsania Agrippina, on the area of which will then rise the Basilica of San Pietro, but also the Horti Domitiae. It is not quite clear what reasons led the Aurelia to have two different paths, the Aurelia Vetus, today Via Aurelia Antica, and the Aurelia Nova, today Via Aurelia, the first starting from today’s Porta San Pancrazio, while the second from today’s Porta Cavalleggeri, and that are joined shortly after the current Piazza di Villa Carpegna.
