Aurelio is the thirteenth district of Rome, located in the west of the city, close to the Leonine Walls and the Aurelian Walls, and rises along the initial stretch of the Via Aurelia, from which it takes its name. In the Imperial period, the first stretch of the Aurelia was characterized by the presence of numerous Horti: those of Vipsania Agrippina, on the area of which will then rise the Basilica of San Pietro, but also the Horti Domitiae. It is not quite clear what reasons led the Aurelia to have two different paths, the Aurelia Vetus, today Via Aurelia Antica, and the Aurelia Nova, today Via Aurelia, the first starting from today’s Porta San Pancrazio, while the second from today’s Porta Cavalleggeri, and that are joined shortly after the current Piazza di Villa Carpegna. Along the ancient Via Aurelia stood several villas, including Villa Floridi and Villa Ferroni, now Abamelek. Between 1920 and 1930 the first urban nucleus of the real district began to develop, which led to the birth of the first buildings around Porta Cavalleggeri. In this period was born also that valuable urban agglomeration that is Monte del Gallo. At the beginning of the ‘900 along the Via Aurelia were built important villas, such as Villa Pacelli and the Villino Tabacchi of Brasini. Also arose important religious buildings such as the Cottolengo Institute, The IDI and the Hospital San Carlo of Nancy. Between 1938 and 1942 the Galleria Principe Amedeo was excavated, which will connect the area to the Lungotevere and lead to the opening of Via Gregorio VII, main artery of the area. For the 1960 Olympics it was crossed by the Olympic Way. Today the Aurelio is a mainly residential neighborhood, in which there are also, especially due to the proximity to the Vatican, many religious institutions.
