The EUR district (Universal Exhibition of Rome) was born from the desire of the fascist regime to glorify imperialist ideas. The project was launched by Benito Mussolini and was to be carried out as part of the Universal Exhibition of Rome in 1942. He planned the construction of a large, well-equipped urban area, including all public services and green areas, connected to the city centre by Via Cristoforo Colombo. The EUR is one of the most interesting modern areas of Rome. The imposing buildings were created by great architects of the time, and emerge from a very airy and green space. It is in Rome the only significant testimony of the artistic and architectural trends of the first half of the twentieth century in Italy. His plan of the neighborhood is inspired by the “classic” model of Trajan’s Roman market architecture. The United Nations Square forms a kind of entrance to the neighborhood, with doors connected by pillars and impressive fountains. Two wide avenues lead to the Palazzo dei Congressi and the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana; this monument, more commonly called “square Colosseum”, can be considered one of the most representative buildings of fascist architecture. The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul stands on an artificial hill, its shapes are simple and austere.
