Rione Monti is the first of the twenty-two Rioni of Rome. The old name of the district was Montium er Biberatrice, from the name of an ancient street that ran inside the remains of the Markets of Trajan. Monti is an eclectic neighborhood in the city center, with bohemian and classic elements. In the south west there are archaeological sites such as the Markets of Trajan and the palace of the Domus Aurea of Nero. A few steps from the district there are the magnificent basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli that houses the famous Moses by Michelangelo. Between two major roads, Via Cavour and Via Nazionale, contains the Suburra, the ancient district “Sub Urbe” (under the city), whose basements emerge at the Colosseum. Its streets are made of stones and its alleys at night are a beauty to take your breath away. The district revolves around the Piazzetta di Madonna dei Monti, with the characteristic Fountain of the Catechumens designed by the architect Giacomo della Porta which is the main meeting place for both locals and tourists. Gourmet shops and slow food restaurants line the streets. In Monti there is still a network of small traders and artisans who give the impression that time has stopped: they are gilders, carpenters, blacksmiths, antiquarians; and then there are them: painters and art galleries; small but precious. There is also one of the most famous vintage markets in Rome.
