Campo de’ Fiori is one of the most famous square in Rome, between Via dei Giubbonari and Piazza della Cancelleria, on the borders of the Parione and Regola districts. Its name derives from the presence of a vast meadow, as well as vegetable gardens, which in 1400 adorned the square. The first urbanization works occurred in 1456. Many palaces were built and the square became a place of passage for prominent personalities such as ambassadors and cardinals who went from Trastevere, passing through Ponte Sisto to San Pietro. Campo de Fiori thus became home to cultural and commercial activities, workshops and artisans and a flourishing and picturesque market, whose populous atmosphere is well rendered by the well-known film Campo de’ fiori of 1943, with Anna Magnani and Aldo Fabrizi. At the center of the square stands the statue of the philosopher Giordano Bruno burned for heresy in 1600 right here. Nowadays Campo de’ Fiori has become one of the favorite night spots for young people, both Italian and foreign, thanks to the presence of many inns, pubs, restaurants and hotels.
