Piazza dell’Oro is located between Via Giulia and Via Acciaioli, takes its name from the homonymous Gold family present in Rome until the end of the seventeenth century. This square is characterized by the presence of the beautiful basilica of S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini, as well as two fifteenth-century houses, the so-called “Houses of the Florentines”, donated by Pope Julius II in 1504 to the Society of the Florentine Pietà. The Basilica of San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini was in fact built for the large Florentine community that lived in this area, supported by the power of two great Tuscan popes of the Medici family, Leo X and Clement VII. Leo X in 1519, granted to the University of the Florentine Nation and Compagnia della Pietà of Rome, the ancient church of “S.Pantaleone juxta flumen” on whose ashes was built the splendid basilica that they dedicated to the patron saint of Florence, S. Giovanni Battista. The church took a century to complete and was carried on by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Giacomo Della Porta and Carlo Maderno, to whom we owe the characteristic dome of elongated shape, for which the Romans baptized it “the sugared sucked”. The dome is set on a high octagonal drum on which there are four rectangular windows, with elegant frames, and as many arched niches. In the bell tower was placed an ancient bell with the English inscription “Maria is my name” which is said to come from the Cathedral of St Paul of London.
