In Via degli Orti d’Alibert, in the Rione Trastevere there is a building complex built by the Istituto delle Case Popolari (ICP), which is a little known and very characteristic place, but about which we have little information. This place was originally a convent of friars, and at the beginning of the 20th century it was provisionally occupied by the Mira-Lanza candle factory. In 1925, as part of the program for the construction of social housing in Rome, the structure was transformed into a housing complex on the initiative of the ICP. It is in fact a closed space, which remains in the lot all in all small occupied previously by the convent, creating within the perimeter of the complex a sort of small village in a defined space, between the two sections of Via degli Orti d’Alibert, the garden of Palazzo Salviati (then Military College) and the Tiberino College.
The current entrance consists of an arch surmounted by a “occhialone” placed on the stretch without exit of the road. Previously, before the dead end there was a gate. Inside the settlements are low, do not go beyond the three floors, and very close to each other, sometimes equipped with balconies and revolving around a system of courtyards.
On an external wall of the complex was placed, in 1948, a Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Love, on the initiative of Roberto Finizio, an inhabitant of the complex particularly busy. The presence of the Edicule Sacra contributed to develop overall a strong devotion to Our Lady of Divine Love, and every 13 May for many years was celebrated with the “Feast of the Madonnella”, a celebration that, we read in the book “The Sacred City: anthropological-religious itineraries in Rome at the end of the millennium”, was held between 1948 and the 50s, and was a great celebration that involved all the inhabitants of the complex. To date this complex continues to maintain its identity, in a secluded and well circumscribed urban and architectural that retains the characteristics of a village, too often rare to find in a metropolis.
